Friendly Steps Emotes
Celebrate on a bench. A bow on a crane is still a button.
Steam lists character customization and emotes in the same breath. Japanese coverage said both would expand for the full launch. This page is the expression layer: when an emote is the joke the game promised, and when it is a hidden walk input that throws a friend off a plank.
There is no public official list of every animation name. This wiki will not invent a 40-emote database. What we can document is how emotes behave in a physics party, how they sit next to skins, and when to ban them for a run.
What an emote actually does
An emote moves bones. Friendly Steps is a game about bones, mass, and a rope. If you bow, point, dance, or taunt while your center of mass is already a suggestion, you have pressed a button. On a bench with the whole rope vertical, that button is comedy. On a girder, it is a fall. Construction does not grade sincerity.
Demo 1.4.4 improved gamepad navigation in the skin shop. That is a hint that customization menus are meant to be used between wipes, not during them. Change looks and browse emotes at the bar or at a checkpoint flag, never mid-beam.
When to use them
- After a checkpoint, once every body is standing.
- On a bench when the co-op freeze has landed.
- At the front door if you actually finished the walkthrough.
- For a clip night you chose on purpose, on a street, not on Tornado.
When to ban them
- Any vertical map: Construction cranes, Tornado ledges, broken night bridges.
- The Trip, where looking at props is already the wipe.
- Speedrun mode. The HUD timer does not pause for a dance. See the speedrun guide.
- While anyone is hanging. You need pull, not a taunt. Mapping is on controls.
Identity versus physics
Dressing as a cop, a firefighter, or a streamer does not change hitboxes in a documented way. Emoting as those identities also does not arrest your friends or put out a fire. The rope is the law. Occupational skins are silhouettes so the lobby can see who is about to fall. Pick high contrast, then emote only when standing is boring.
If two players pick the same streamer look, rename them in overlay so a pull callout is not “the other you.” An emote will not fix a confused callout.
Voice chat and emotes
Online voice chat is a Steam feature. Use it for freeze and pull. Use emotes for the screenshot. If you try to communicate only with dances on a melting floor, you will crawl. Discord from the links hub is the backup if in-game voice doubles or drops.
After launch day
The September 3, 2026 product is scheduled to expand costumes, characters, and emotes beyond the demo closet. When a studio list of animation names exists, it will be appended here as names, still with no fake stats. Until then, the rule is one sentence: vertical bodies may celebrate; horizontal bodies may not.
If your group came to Friendly Steps for the walk, treat emotes as dessert. If they came for a montage, say so, pick a city street, and keep the tier list away from S-tier maps. A bow at the bar is friendly. A bow on a crane is a physics paper.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Friendly Steps questions.
Can an emote cancel a fall?
No. Emotes animate. Falls need crawl and pull from the controls page.
Where is the full emote list?
Not in a public studio document yet. This page documents behavior, not invented names. Closet notes live with skins.
Should we emote in speedrun mode?
No. The clock is judging you. Rules are on the speedrun page.
Do emotes differ by costume?
Not in any documented mechanical way. Costumes are looks. Physics stays the rope.
