Friendly Steps Skins

Look ridiculous. Stay visible. Do not emote on the crane.

Skins and Costumes

Friendly Steps sells the closet almost as hard as the rope. The official feature list is character customization and emotes. The store blurb names salaryman, firefighter, punk, cop, and streamer as the ridiculous after-hours lineup. This page is the closet guide: what those presets are for, how the shop behaves, and why visibility beats lore.

Japanese press notes that the full game is scheduled to ship more costumes, characters, and customization than the demo. A community skin contest was also dangled in Steam discussions. Until those extra pages are in a public build, treat the five occupational looks as the documented set — not as a leaked 200-item database.

The documented presets

  • Salaryman. Easy to read on city streets. Ties and pale shirts catch lantern light. A good default for locations that happen at night.
  • Firefighter. High contrast, joke value on Construction, zero extra armor. You will still ragdoll off a crane.
  • Punk. Fun silhouette, easy to lose on dark pavement if the palette is black-on-black. Save it for dusk maps or parks.
  • Cop. Useful as a back-of-rope marker so the lobby remembers who is on pull duty. See the co-op guide.
  • Streamer. The costume the clips want. Wear it after you can walk. Wearing it on night one is how you get a montage of your own face-plants.

None of these are classes. There is no firefighter stat that shortens a stride. If a future patch adds mechanical cosmetics, it will be written in Updates.

Using the skin shop

Demo 1.4.4 improved gamepad navigation in the shop, skipped non-interactable items, and kept the selection on-screen. That matters because a lot of players browse outfits with the same pad they walk with. If a slot looks locked, it is probably not a secret walk buff. It is unreleased closet space.

Change skins at the bar or at a checkpoint, never on a beam. The physics scene does not pause because you wanted a hat. If the shop UI overlays a loading screen, that was a 1.4.4 bug they said they fixed — update your demo branch if you still see it.

Emotes

Emotes are listed next to customization for a reason: they are the celebration layer. Use them when the whole rope is vertical. A bow, a point, a taunt, whatever the build offers — they still move bones. On a girder that is an input. On a bench it is the joke the game promised.

If you are in speedrun mode, skip emotes. The clock on the HUD is already judging you. Details on that mindset sit in the walkthrough.

Visibility rules that prevent wipes

  • One bright outfit in the lead so the rest of the rope has a beacon.
  • Do not run four dark palettes in The Trip’s caves.
  • If two players pick near-identical streamer looks, rename them in Steam overlay so pull callouts are not “you, no, the other you.”
  • Recolor if the build allows it. If it does not, pick a different preset.

Contest skins and future closet pages

When contest winners or launch-day outfits drop, they belong on this page as extra silhouettes, still with no fake stats. The players hub will keep the social roles. This page will keep the closet. If Ytopia publishes an official cosmetics list, we will match it instead of inventing names.

Until September 3, 2026, pick a look you can see at 2 a.m. city lighting, assign a lead, and go. The rope does not grade fashion. It grades plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Friendly Steps questions.

Are skins paid DLC?

The demo treats them as a shop of presets. Do not assume a cash shop. If a launch cosmetic bundle appears, it will be noted in Updates.

Which skin is best?

The one your teammates can see. Salaryman and firefighter read well at night. Punk can vanish on dark streets.

Can emotes cancel a fall?

No. Emotes are animations. During a hang you need pull and crawl from the controls page, not a taunt.

Will the full game add more outfits?

That is the studio's stated direction: more costumes and customization at launch. This list stays conservative until those items are in a public build.
