Friendly Steps Players
Salaryman, firefighter, punk, cop, streamer — still the same terrible legs.
Players in Friendly Steps are not RPG classes. There is no hidden stat that makes the firefighter walk better than the streamer. The Steam copy is a costume pitch: customize your look, stumble in style, and use emotes after (or during) a disaster. This hub is about the people on the rope — how they dress, how they should stand in line, and which habits actually change a run.
If you want the input sheet, leave this hub and open Controls. If you want the physics, open How to walk. If you want the wardrobe list, stay for the skins page.
What customization actually is
Press coverage and the store page name occupational presets: salaryman, firefighter, punk, cop, and streamer. Japanese writeups add that the full launch is scheduled to expand costumes, characters, and emotes beyond the demo closet. Demo 1.4.4 specifically improved gamepad navigation in the skin shop, which is a tell: they expect you to browse outfits with a pad between wipes.
A skin contest showed up in community posts around the same season. Treat contest winners as extra closet pages when they ship, not as a battle pass with power. If a cosmetic ever did change physics, it would be news for Updates, not a silent buff.
Emotes are listed next to customization. Use them on benches and checkpoints. Using them on a crane is an input. Construction does not care that your bow looked sincere. The dedicated emotes page is the rule sheet for when a taunt is dessert and when it is a fall.
Roles are not classes
The useful “builds” are social:
- Calm tapper in front.
- Controller user in the middle to damp panic.
- Most patient person on pull duty at the back.
Those roles live in the co-op guide. Skins can advertise the role — put the cop at the back if it helps the lobby remember who pulls — but the costume does not pull for you.
Solo players still belong here. Your “party” is one body and a rope with less comedy. Pick a high-contrast outfit so you can see your own feet at night. Dark punk on a dark street is a visibility bug you gave yourself.
Who should host
Host is a player role too. Give hosting to the stable PC that meets system requirements, not to the person with the funniest streamer skin. Ragdoll sync is the real raid mechanic.
If one friend owns the game and others are trying it, check whether Remote Play Together is enabled in your Steam build. It will not fix bad taps. It will save an argument about keys on launch week.
Etiquette that is actually mechanical
Do not emote while someone hangs. Do not change outfits mid-beam. Do not drink because your skin is a firefighter and “could handle it.” Items do not care about your identity preset.
Do laugh. The game is a friendship stress test with a beer theme. The review is blunt about who should skip it: lobbies that already explode after one fall. Skins will not save that group. A named lead might.
When the closet gets bigger after September 3, 2026, this hub will point at the new pages. Until then, pick a silhouette you can see, assign a lead, and walk. The skins list is the closet. This page is the social loadout.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Friendly Steps questions.
Do costumes change walking stats?
Not in any documented way. They are silhouettes and jokes. Walking skill is still tiny steps, described in How to walk.
Where is the full outfit list?
On the skins page. The demo closet is occupational presets; the full launch is scheduled to add more.
Should we match outfits?
Only for clips. For play, pick high contrast so teammates can see who is about to fall.
Can I play as a cop and arrest my friends?
You can dress as a cop. The rope is still the law. Gameplay systems stay physics, not a job simulator.
