Friendly Steps Getting Started
Leave the bar, learn the legs, and do not drink the second beer yet.
Friendly Steps looks simple on the Steam page and then immediately refuses to let you walk. That is the point. KORO.GAMES built a physics party where you and up to three friends try to get home after a night that already went too far. Ytopia publishes it. The full game is scheduled for September 3, 2026 on Steam. A free demo has been playable since June 2026, and several open playtests added named maps such as Construction, The Trip, and Tornado.
This page is the first-hour checklist. It does not replace the controls guide or the co-op rope guide. It tells you what to install, what the opening scene is doing, and which wiki pages to open before your friends join voice chat.
What you are actually trying to do
The premise is a text from home. In public sessions, the squad is at a bar when each character gets a message that it is time to leave. Nobody calls a car. You tie a rope around the group and walk. The city answers with hills, stairs, bridges, parks, construction, playgrounds, and shortcuts that exist only to dare you.
You can play solo. Steam lists single-player, local co-op, LAN co-op, and online co-op, plus voice chat and full controller support. The comedy lands hardest with two to four people because one fall yanks everyone else. If you are learning the legs, start solo or with one patient friend. A four-stack on night one is how Discord clips get made, not how routes get finished.
Install and first launch
- Open the official Steam app page (app ID 4279630) and install the demo or the full build when it ships.
- Confirm you meet the system requirements. The floor is roughly a GTX 750 Ti / R7 260X class GPU, 8 GB of RAM, and 1.5 GB of disk on 64-bit Windows 10. macOS and Linux are also listed.
- Pick keyboard and mouse if you want the mapping streamers explain out loud. Pick a gamepad if you prefer triggers for each leg. Both work; mixing them in one lobby is fine.
- Set a costume later. The first session should be about feet, not the skins shop.
- Turn on voice chat if you are online. The rope does not come with a plan. You have to talk.
The first ten minutes
The tutorial line from the developer is blunt: you forgot how to walk. Hold the left mouse button to lift the left leg. Press the right mouse button to drag the right leg. Hold a forward key and tap left-right, left-right. Tiny steps beat heroic strides. If you plant one foot on a plank, bring the other foot next to it with extra taps instead of lunging.
Space is not a magic jump. In several public sessions it is a shout or a stumble, not a skip. Crouch or crawl is the recovery tool when the center of mass is already gone. If the whole rope is horizontal, stop walking and crawl until two people can stand. Then restart the tap rhythm together.
Do not chug every bottle you see. Items exist, and drinking makes the physics worse on purpose. Save beers for a victory bench, not for the first bridge.
Who should be in your first lobby
Two players is the teaching size. One person walks in front and calls foot placement. The person in back watches the rope angle and presses the pull input when someone hangs off a ledge. In KYRSP33DY’s session that pull is E while looking at the dangling teammate. Read the co-op guide before you add a third or fourth body. Extra people add extra slack, extra collisions, and extra ways to drag a clean walker into a ditch.
Local play is calmer for learning because you can point at the same screen. Online play is the intended party mode. Remote Play Together is listed on store trackers if one person owns the build and wants to host.
What to ignore on night one
Skip speedrun mode until you can cross a flat street. Skip side quests that pull you toward suspicious NPCs. Skip the glowing alley that promises a shortcut. The walkthrough explains when those detours are worth it. The route tier list marks which spaces are jokes and which spaces reset you to a checkpoint.
Also skip arguing about who is “bad at games.” Friendly Steps is a coordination toy. The player who taps smaller steps is usually the one carrying the rope, not the one with the most FPS hours.
After you can walk twenty steps
Open How to walk for balance details. Open locations so you recognize hills versus construction versus the Trip’s lantern caves. If a playtest map is in your build, read Construction or Tornado before you waste an hour on a vertical drop.
When the legs feel less cursed, pick a costume on the players hub, check updates for demo patch notes, and keep this wiki nearby. The city does not get nicer. You just fall with more style.
The SMii7Y video below is the best public example of a first session: wives text, rope, mouse-tap walking, and the exact moment a friend pulls the whole squad down. Watch it after you have the mapping, not before, or you will copy the panic instead of the rhythm.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Friendly Steps questions.
Is Friendly Steps out yet?
The full Steam launch is scheduled for September 3, 2026. A free demo and several playtests have already been playable. This wiki treats the full game as upcoming.
Should I learn solo or with friends?
Learn the tap rhythm solo or in a duo. Add a four-stack only after you can walk a short street without crawling. See the co-op guide for lobby roles.
Does Friendly Steps have a tutorial?
Yes. The developer published a short intro that tells you to lift each leg with a separate button. The controls page expands that into keyboard and gamepad mappings.
What should I read next?
Controls, then how to walk, then co-op. If your squad already left the bar, skip ahead to the walkthrough.
