Friendly Steps Demo
The free Steam build that already taught the internet how not to walk.
The Friendly Steps demo is the reason this wiki has videos. Ytopia and KORO.GAMES put a free Steam build in players’ hands in June 2026, showed it at Next Fest, then kept reopening playtests with new maps. The full game is still scheduled for September 3, 2026. The demo is the current teacher.
Install it from the same Steam app page as the full product (4279630). If a button says Play or Demo, that is the branch. You do not need a private key for the public demo. Older “request access” language applied to some playtest waves; follow the store button you actually see.
What the demo is for
- Prove that two mouse buttons can be legs.
- Prove that your friends will listen to freeze callouts.
- Sample city streets before you pay for the launch build.
- Sample specialist maps when a playtest is attached: Construction, The Trip, Tornado.
It is not a 20-hour campaign and it is not a promise that every launch quest is already in the files. Japanese press said the product version is scheduled to add more locations, characters, items, costumes, and side quests. Play the demo as a slice.
Next Fest and the clip economy
The June 15–22, 2026 Next Fest window is why SMii7Y, Criken, KYRSP33DY, and Mithzan sessions exist. Those videos are mapped onto Guides with one embed per page. The trailer in the middle of this page is the official “demo is out” pitch, not a walkthrough.
If you are demoing for a stream, read the review for tone and the co-op guide for pull. Do not drink the whole HUD counter on stream night unless the bit is the wipe.
Demo 1.4.4 (July 2, 2026)
Public notes from the team:
- Font stack rebuilt for multilingual UI, including better CJK and Cyrillic.
- Mixed glyph weights and broken characters in play mode addressed, still iterating.
- Clearer logging so bug reports mean something.
- Menu UI no longer sitting on top of loading screens during scene changes.
- Skin-shop gamepad navigation improved; non-interactable items skipped; list follows the cursor.
That patch is polish, not a new city. If your demo is older than 1.4.4, update before you file a font bug. If your language looks wrong, tell them; they asked for that feedback in the same post.
Playtest maps versus the demo spine
The demo spine is the bar-to-street walk. Playtests bolted on named arenas. Construction is height. The Trip is tone and visibility. Tornado is height plus spite, billed as the last open playtest. You may not see all three in a single click today. When a Playtest button appears, read the matching guide before you queue a four-stack of first-timers.
Should you wait for launch instead?
Wait if you only want a content-complete wardrobe and quest list. Do not wait if you need to know whether the controls are acceptable. The controls will not become a normal third-person walk on September 3. They are the product. Getting Started is shorter if you already hated or loved the demo.
Hardware notes are the same as launch: see system requirements. A demo that hitches on ragdolls will not hitch less with more beers.
When the store page replaces Demo with Play for the full build, keep the demo lessons. Tiny steps still win. The updates hub will mark the switch. Until then, this page is the live product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Friendly Steps questions.
Is the Friendly Steps demo free?
Yes. It has been a free Steam demo since June 2026. Use the official app page rather than a random key site.
Does the demo include Construction and Tornado?
Those appeared as playtest slices around the demo period. Your store button may show Demo, Playtest, or both. Read the matching guide before you invite four people.
What is demo version 1.4.4?
A July 2026 polish build: fonts, logging, loading-screen UI, and skin-shop gamepad fixes. Update to it before reporting display bugs.
Will demo progress carry to the full game?
Do not count on it. Treat the demo as practice. Cosmetics and checkpoints may reset on September 3, 2026.
