Friendly Steps Items

If you can pick it up, it probably makes walking worse.

Items and Drinks

Friendly Steps is not a loot shooter. The important pickups are bottles, junk, and whatever the night left on a bench. Steam’s feature list still promises hidden items, quests, and side paths, and the demo HUD already jokes about how many drinks you have chained together. This page is the consumption guide: what to touch, what to leave, and how a beer turns a stable rope into modern art.

The bench screenshot on this page is the whole economy. Checkpoint flag in the corner. Timer at the top. A drink counter with a ridiculous number. Two green bottles on a plank. One teammate chugging, one teammate already on the ground, two teammates still trying to be people. That is an item tutorial whether the studio labeled it or not.

Beer is a difficulty slider

The store page is honest about alcohol. Characters drink beer, beer is in the world, and playable characters can drink more. Mature-content text on Steam calls that out specifically. PEGI listings in some stores sit at 16. This wiki is not a drinking guide. It is a physics guide. In the build, extra drinks make the walk harder. That is the loop: see bottle, dare friend, fall down.

Rules that keep a night finishable:

  • No drinks on beams, cranes, or stairs.
  • No drinks while anyone is crawling.
  • One celebratory bottle at a checkpoint, not a round for the whole rope.
  • If the HUD counter is already a meme, you are no longer in a walkthrough. You are in a clip. That is fine if you chose it.

Open playtests even joked about spotting bottles and questionable trash, picking them up, and consuming them. Treat trash the same as beer unless a quest text says otherwise. If the prompt is only “use,” assume slapstick.

Benches, checkpoints, and the HUD

Benches are rest spots and collision traps. Sitting or emoting on a bench is safe only when the whole rope has arrived. If the lead sits while the anchor is still in the street, the rope clothesline’s a pedestrian. Use benches as the co-op freeze point: all vertical, then emote, then move.

Checkpoint flags are more valuable than any pickup. Take them. Do not skip a flag to save ten seconds. Construction and Tornado will bill you minutes for that arrogance. See Construction and Tornado.

The timer is for speedrun mode and for pride. Ignore it until your taps are boring. Steam lists speedrun mode as a feature, not as the default night.

Quest items and shortcuts

Side paths may ask you to carry or deliver something. If the object adds mass or occupies a hand, your walk gets worse. Assign the calmest player as carrier. Everyone else walks as if that person is a fragile crate. If the quest wants you to chug, it is probably a joke at your expense.

Do not confuse a glowing bottle with a key item. Keys, if a build uses them, will have a prompt that is not “drink.” When in doubt, leave it and finish the sidewalk from the walkthrough.

What not to invent

This wiki will not fabricate a full item database with fake stats. Until the September 3, 2026 launch publishes a stable list, the truthful set is:

  • Beer bottles that increase the drunk modifier.
  • World trash that exists to be consumed or thrown.
  • Checkpoint flags and benches as route tools.
  • Costume pieces, which are not items you find on the street — they live in the skins shop.

If a patch adds a real quest gadget, it will land in Updates first, then here.

A practical night loadout

Carry nothing. Drink almost nothing. Take every flag. Sit only when the rope is fully on the plank. That loadout beats any secret bottle. The tier list can rank routes; it cannot rank a squad that keeps chugging on a crane.

If your friends came here for chaos, say that out loud and pick a city street, not Tornado. Items are a party modifier. They are not a progression system. Friendly Steps stays funny when the beers are rare enough that a single chug is an event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Friendly Steps questions.

Do beers give buffs?

They give slapstick. Expect worse balance, not a power-up. Save them for a checkpoint bench, never for a crane.

What does the drink counter mean?

It is a running joke about how wasted the rope is. A huge number means you chose clips over a finish. See the HUD notes above.

Are there weapons or healing items?

Not in the sense of an RPG. Pickups are mostly drinks and trash. Recovery is crawl, pull, and checkpoints, as in How to walk.

Should I loot during speedrun mode?

No. Speedrun mode is the fastest way home. Bottles are detours. Learn the sidewalks in the walkthrough first.
