Friendly Steps Speedrun

The same legs, a louder clock, and a rope that still hates heroic strides.

Speedrun Mode

Steam lists a speedrun mode as a first-class feature: find the fastest way home. Japanese press called it a time-attack mode for competing on the walk back. Store trackers also mention Steam leaderboards. This page is how to treat that clock without inventing split names the studio has not published.

The HUD in public builds already shows a timer. The bench screenshot on this page has 01:09:25 in the middle of the frame next to a drink counter that has become a joke. That is the whole speedrun conversation in one image. Time is real. Drinks are optional sabotage. See items.

Do not open this page as a first lesson. If you cannot plant both feet on a curb, you are not racing. Read How to walk and finish a sober sidewalk from the walkthrough first.

What speedrun mode is not

It is not a different control scheme. Left leg, right leg, forward, crawl, pull — the controls do not grow a sprint key because a clock appeared. Space is still not a jump. Big strides still dump the rope. The mode only removes your excuse to pose on benches.

It is not an RPG timer with buffs. Beers do not make you faster. They make the next plant miss. A huge drink counter is a comedy save, not a world record attempt.

It is not permission to take every glowing shortcut. The tier list already marks some skips as wipe farms. A wipe costs more than the hill you tried to skip. Time-attack players take the sidewalk they can finish.

A practical night plan for the clock

  1. Two or three players, not four, until freeze-and-pull is automatic. Four bodies are extra collisions. Criken’s group already named bumping as the hard part.
  2. Name a lead who taps small. Swap them the moment fatigue makes strides longer.
  3. Ban bottles until the front door. Celebrate after the timer stops.
  4. Take every checkpoint flag you see. Resetting from a flag is faster than crawling a district of pride.
  5. Skip emotes. They are physics inputs. Save them for the emotes page after the run.
  6. If a shortcut’s landing is not visible, it is not a skip. It is a clip.

Rope order still matters

Kaif’s playtest squad learned that the rope only connects you to the person next to you. In a race, that means the lead cannot “pull the whole chain” by walking harder. If player two is down, player one comes back. Stretching an adjacent link into a zip-line is a reset. Full roles sit in the co-op guide.

Local or LAN is cleaner for records you care about. Online desync looks like a physics bug and it is a network bug. Host on Ethernet. Specs sit on system requirements.

Leaderboards and honesty

Steam lists leaderboards. This wiki will not invent category names (any%, no beer, solo) until a public board shows them. If you are comparing times in Discord, say the party size, whether bottles were allowed, and whether the route used a known skip. Otherwise you are arguing about two different nights.

Solo time-attack is a real Steam pitch — single-player is listed — but the comedy and the rope mass change. Do not paste a four-stack time next to a solo time and call it science.

Maps that punish the clock

  • City streets: best first race. Short falls.
  • Bridges: pendulum tax. Pull or reset. See the walkthrough.
  • Construction: crane time is mostly waiting. Waiting is faster than the tractor.
  • The Trip: looking at props is free time donated to the clock.
  • Tornado: starting-line tax. Not a beginner category.

After September 3, 2026

The full launch is still scheduled, not treated as already shipped on this wiki. When official boards and a stable route list exist, they will land here and in Updates. Until then, the winning speedrun is the boring one: tiny steps, no beers, visible landings, a lead who will freeze.

If your friends came for clips, say that out loud and pick a street, not a leaderboard. The clock does not clap. It only counts how long you argued about a bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Friendly Steps questions.

Does speedrun mode change the controls?

No. Same legs, same pull, same crawl. The clock is extra pressure. Mapping stays on the controls page.

Are beers faster?

No. They raise the drunk modifier. Leave them. The items page is the sobriety briefing.

Should I take every shortcut?

Only if you can see the landing and the tier list does not mark it as a wipe farm. A reset costs more than a hill.

Is there an official any% route?

Not in a public studio document this wiki can cite. Race the sidewalk you can finish, then add specialist maps after launch.
