Friendly Steps on Steam Deck

Stylized art is not a Verified badge. Check the store after September 3.

Steam Deck

Steam lists Friendly Steps Deck compatibility as Unknown. That is the whole official sentence. This page exists because people will search the question anyway, and because the game already advertises full controller support — which is necessary on a Deck but not sufficient.

Do not buy a dock on the assumption that a cartoon night walk is light. Four ragdolls, a rope, and a city of props can hitch on hardware that “plays other indies.” The system requirements still matter.

What is documented

  • Platforms on trackers: Windows, plus macOS and Linux listings.
  • Full controller support and DualShock compatibility on Steam.
  • Demo 1.4.4 improved gamepad navigation in the skin shop.
  • Online co-op wants broadband. A Deck on café Wi-Fi will look like a physics bug.

Linux on Deck usually means Proton unless a native build is verified. Unknown means Valve has not published Verified, Playable, or Unsupported for this app ID (4279630) in the store widget this wiki used. After the September 3, 2026 launch, read the Deck badge on the Steam page, not a guess on Discord.

Controls on a handheld

The walk is one input per leg. On a pad, public sessions used triggers or bumpers per foot plus a stick for facing. That mapping is friendlier on a Deck than a mouse, because analog pressure makes tiny steps easier. Keyboard players still aim feet onto beams better. Mixed lobbies can put the Deck user in the middle of the rope as a damper. See controls and the co-op guide.

Bind pull to a face button you can hit without dropping a trigger. If pull shares a walk input, you will punch a teammate instead of saving them.

Gyro is not a documented walk aid. Do not invent a gyro-leg scheme. If a launch patch adds one, Updates will say so.

Performance expectations

Minimum GPU class on Windows is GTX 750 Ti / R7 260X. Deck is a different chip. Cap FPS if four bodies fall at once. Lower shadows. Close the browser decoding four VODs. Construction cranes and Tornado drops keep more world on screen than a curb.

If the demo already stutters on your Deck, the full depot will not magically add a desktop GPU. Play the demo first if a Deck build is even offered in your library.

Online play from a handheld

Voice chat is a Steam feature. Headphones help. Hosting from a Deck on wireless is the worst common setup. Let a desktop host; join as a client. Remote Play Together may appear on trackers when only one person owns the game — still needs the host to meet spec.

After launch

This wiki will not mark Friendly Steps as Deck Verified until Steam does. When the badge flips, this page will flip. Until then the honest advice is: controller support is promising, compatibility is unknown, tiny steps still win, and the how to buy path is still the Steam PC store.

If your friends are on Deck and you are on a 1050 Ti, you can still rope up. Just freeze more. The rope does not care which silicon planted the foot. It cares that the foot planted.
